  • Getting Started with Therapy

We know that getting started with therapy can be intimidating. This is why we have listed the steps to get started, and what the process of therapy will look like. Please reach out to us if you have any questions we did not answer.

    Initial phone call

When you call or email to start therapy you will speak with our office manager Danielle. She will gather your demographic information, and ask you why you are seeking therapy. She will also ask that you arrive to your appointment 10/15 minutes early to complete the intake paperwork. These questions help her to set you up with the appropriate therapist that is trained to help you with what you are experiencing. Danielle will also discuss with you the cost of therapy.

    First Session

You will arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to complete the intake paperwork. This paperwork consists of basic information about you and your symptoms. It will also have information about Mindful Counseling’s policies, and practices. After you complete your paperwork you will then enter your first session with your therapist. In this session you will discuss what you are experiencing, and what goals you would like to set for therapy. The first session will be around 50 to 60 minutes. The therapist will also discuss the frequency of therapy she recommends for you. Usually the frequency if either weekly or biweekly, and the sessions are 45-60 minutes.

During therapy and what to Expect

You will work weekly or every other week with your therapist on your treatment plan which are the goals you agreed upon in the initial session. Throughout this process there may be times that you change or add goals to your treatment.

During therapy your therapist will listen to you with non-judgmental ears. They will listen and will be objective unlike many friends, and family members. This is because they are not directly effected by your problem (s). Your therapist will assist by helping you understand yourself better. They may suggest coping skills, and tools to assist you through what you are experiencing. The therapist may also send you home with homework. It is also important to remember that your therapist will not tell you what to do.

It is important to remember that every therapy journey is different, and there is no set timeframe for therapy. Your  journey of healing will be different from anybody else’s journey.
